Mountain Hawk Eagles are large brown and white raptors that live from the Himalayan Mountains to Japan and the Russian Far East, in a range of forested habitats. They are the second-largest Asian hawk eagles.

The mountain hawk-eagle (Nisaetus nipalensis) or Hodgson's hawk-eagle, is a large bird of prey native to Asia. The latter name is in reference to the naturalist, Brian Houghton Hodgson, who described the species after collecting one himself in the Himalayas.

It is frequently sighted in Kathmandu Vally, the Annapurna Region, and Langtang National Park, in Nepal (R. Gurung in litt. 2021). Ferguson-Lees and Christie (2001) estimated the population to be 1,001-10,000 individuals, but thought that it was most likely nearer the latter figure. This is roughly equivalent to 670-6,700 mature individuals.

The birds of this genus are distinguished by wings and tail formed upon the accipitrine model; but their nares are transverse and speculated as in the eagles. Their festooned bills have a form which is osculant between the hawks and buzzards.
