The Tupolev Tu-22M (Russian: Туполев Ту-22М; NATO reporting name: Backfire) is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the 1960s. The bomber was reported as being designated Tu-26 by Western intelligence at one time. [1]

From 1965, all Tu-22 production had similar but uprated RD-7M2 engines with 162 kN (16,500 kgp / 36,380 lbf) afterburning thrust; earlier machines still in service were refitted with the newer engines. Each main landing gear assembly had four wheels in a 2x2 bogie arrangement, with the landing gear retracting backwards into the wing fairing.

Sep 10, 2012 · The aircraft is equipped with tricycle landing gear to support operations on unprepared runways. The nose gear includes backward retractable twin wheels. Each main landing gear unit consists of six wheels in a 2×3 bogie arrangement. These are retracted straight in to the fuselage.

Landing Gear. The gear struts are rather simple, but because of the large surface of the airframe, they're largely hidden. I left 'em alone, but did purchase a set of Equipage prepainted resin wheels w/rubber tires (Lindenhill Imports).

The aircraft has a semi-monocoque fuselage and retractable tricycle landing gear with nose-landing gear. The power unit consists of two НК-25 reheated double-flow turbofan engines. TA-6A APU is installed in the dorsal fin fairing.

The Tupolev Tu-22M3 is equipped with a tricycle landing gear to support operations on unprepared runways. The nose includes twin wheels that are pulled back. Each main landing unit consists of six wheels in a 2 × 3 bogie arrangement. These are pulled directly into the fuselage.

In fact, the Tu-22M inherited from the Tu-22 only the front landing gear. Tests showed that the Tu-22M0 did not meet the military’s expectations. The Tu-22M1 turned out to be not much better.
