Health officials say two residents in Queens have been infected, one was hospitalized briefly and discharged while the other remains hospitalization with encephalitis, an infection of the brain.

Two Queens residents have tested positive for West Nile virus, New York City health officials announced Friday. One patient was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease and is currently hospitalized with a brain infection. The other was briefly hospitalized with West Nile fever and has since been released.

West Nile virus has been reported in two Queens residents, the New York City Health Department confirmed today. These are the first human cases of West Nile virus for the 2025 season. The announcement comes amid widespread detection of the virus in mosquito pools across all five boroughs since July.
