New Orleans has confirmed a second case of neuroinvasive West Nile virus, with a third under investigation. Mosquito spraying begins tonight.

The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed one human case of West Nile virus in Orleans Parish. Officials said the resident has the neuroinvasive form of the disease, which can cause serious illness.

Orleans Parish has reported its second human case of the West Nile virus. The second human case was reported Tuesday. The first was recorded on Aug. 8. West Nile virus cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
