TEL AVIV, Israel — The rockets from Gaza have mostly fallen silent. A ceasefire with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon has taken hold. But repeated fire from Yemen’s Houthi rebels, a faraway foe, is proving a stubborn threat for Israel.

The ongoing Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7, 2023, has led to a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale. As the death toll among besieged and starved Palestinian civilians continues to rise daily, Israel is currently facing charges of genocide against Palestinians before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Israel is signaling a wider campaign against Houthi militants in Yemen, a mountainous and impoverished country more than 1,000 miles from Israeli territory.

Israel launched a multi-wave attack across Yemen in retaliation for Houthi missile and drone strikes, the Israeli military confirmed Thursday.

Israel says it has hit Houthi targets across Yemen with airstrikes. The IDF says the targets were being used for military purposes and were points of entry for smuggled Iranian weapons. The Israeli military said it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen early Saturday, a day after the Huthi-held capital Sanaa was hit by fresh air strikes.

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Sanaa on Friday as part of a weekly demonstration in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Those gathered waved flags, banners and rifles aloft as they chanted anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans.

The United States said it struck targets in Yemen's rebel-held capital in December, hours after a Huthi rebel missile wounded people in Israel. But a nighttime picture of a massive fire repeatedly shared on social media does not show the US strike.
