Nathan Adrian, defending Olympic champion, squeaked into the 100m freestyle semifinals after finishing in 16th place in Tuesday’s preliminary heats.

Adrian took gold in both the 100-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter medley relay, and earned a silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay at the London Olympics.

Adrian, 35, swam at three Olympics from 2008-16. He won gold in the 100 freestyle at the 2012 London Games, then followed with bronze in both the 50 and 100 free in Rio in 2016.
