According to officials, the SBI and FBI were requested by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office to assist with a child abduction case. The 15-year-old girl was taken early Wednesday morning and quickly reported missing by her family. As a result, an Amber Alert was issued.

WTVD, an ABC affiliate, reports that 32-year-old Elihue Martin Mahler of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and 24-year-old Austyn Lee Cole of Kitty Hawk face charges of felony human trafficking of a child victim, felony kidnapping, felony conspiracy to kidnap, and felony conspiracy, human trafficking.

“AMBER Alerts are activated in the most serious child-abduction cases,” according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the community to assist in the search for and safe recovery of a missing child.”
