In the film, Mengele bases his defense on a bizarre claim that he acted out of compassion: He killed people to spare them the longer agony of waiting to die in the gas chambers.

The bones were determined to be those of a white male between 64 and 74 years of age–Mengele was 67 in 1979–who stood about 5 feet 10. Mengele`s pre-war records showed him to be about this height.
