Following snow, sleet and ice that arrived in the Big Bend and South Georgia Tuesday due to a winter storm, a large stretch of a major highway shut down Wednesday evening.
Interstate 10 in the Baton Rouge metro area reopened to both eastbound and westbound traffic Thursday afternoon, the Department of Transportation and Development announced.
Trucker Alexis Barnett was trying to make the trip Wednesday from Destin to Sarasota when Florida shut down I-10 and re-routed traffic onto Highway 90. That’s when the driving started getting treacherous. “Going up the hills and down the hills, it was nothing but black ice. Just a sheet of ice,” she said.
Frozen temperatures created an icy mess overnight in Northwest Florida, but as the sun rose Thursday some roads and bridges began to reopen.
Interstate 10 from the Louisiana-Texas state line to as far east as Sorrento or Gramercy could be fully open to traffic in both directions at some point Thursday afternoon, Department of Transportation and Development Secretary Joe Donahue said.
“Since the temps went back down to freezing, there have been five vehicles spin and slide on the icy bridge!!!” The Pascagoula Police Department posted on its Facebook page. “The driving conditions are dangerous right now. First responders are placing barricades on both sides to warn motorists not to drive on the bridge.”
ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. ( WALA) - The Florida Department of Transportation announced that I-10 will be closed in both directions. The closure will stretch from the Alabama/Florida state line to Exit 192 at Highway 90 in Gadsden County. The closure is due to the freezing conditions and remaining ice and snow on the roads.
Forecasters said it was too early to tell whether the ice and snow would approach or beat Tallahassee’s all-time snowfall record of 2.8 inches set in 1958.
Interstate 10 continues to be closed in both directions from the Alabama, Florida state line to Exit 192 in Gadsden County.
Per Florida Highway Patrol, I-10 from mile marker 5 to mile marker 56 is CLOSED. The Barrancas Avenue Bayou Chico Bridge was closed in both directions at 4:58 p.m. because of ice, according the Florida Department of Transportation.
PHOENIX — The westbound lanes of Interstate 10 from Chandler to central Phoenix will be closed this weekend due to a traffic shift. The Arizona Department of Transportation said the closure will take place between the Loop 202 freeway to Interstate 17. The closure starts at 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, and ends at 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27.
Interstate 10 heading into downtown Phoenix from the West Valley was closed briefly after a crash Wednesday morning.
