The US film industry's first major gathering since wildfires devastated Los Angeles begins Thursday at Sundance, where Olivia Colman and John Lithgow will kick off the indie movie festival under somber circumstances.

Sundance Film Festival rolls on. In a letter attributed to acting CEO Amanda Kelso and public programming director Eugene Hernandez, Sundance expressed its deepest sympathy over the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles on Monday.

Sundance will take place from Jan. 23 through Feb. 2. The 41st edition may be the next-to-last in Park City, with Boulder and Cincinnati as other possible homes for the festival starting in 2027.

Park City became an obvious choice for Aero partially because of its concentration of homeowners who own in both Los Angeles and Park City.

“Every year you just don’t know,” says Sony Pictures Classics co-founder Tom Bernard. Last year his company acquired Kneecap, which earned six Bafta nominations and is Ireland’s shortlisted Oscar submission. “Sundance to me is still about discovery when the obvious selections are getting gobbled up by the streamers.”

Last year’s lineup brought us I Saw The TV Glow and Between the Temples, and this year’s festival promises a number of oddities and originals.
