Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is backing a moratorium on clearing homeless encampments and called for a review of the city’s policy on caring for the unhoused following the death of a man during a sweep last week.

Mayor Dickens called for city council “to conduct a complete review of encampment closures, rehousing, and how we care for the unsheltered,” and he also called for a moratorium on all homeless encampment sweeps while the city figures out a plan.

Supporters of Cornelius Taylor — the Black man who officials say was killed on Jan. 17 by a construction vehicle clearing an encampment of unhoused people in Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue neighborhood — are demanding city policy changes following his horrific demise.

Dickens says he wrote a letter to the federal government last month hoping to find a solution to what he calls frequent TSA callouts.
