There’s a lot to like about this little remote, which is based upon a LilyGo TTGO ESP32 board with on-board display. The circuitry is basically that and a rotary encoder plus a tiny LiPo battery.
A lot of people have used brushless or stepper motors as rotary encoders, but they all seem to do it by using the motor as a generator and looking at the phases and voltages.
It has a rotary encoder and a button, making it easy and responsive to use. It also has a touchscreen, which adds a modern and easy-to-use feature to the device.
