The leading man who thrilled as a young star then centered the epic, melodramatic miniseries ‘Shogun’ and ‘The Thorn Birds.’

Richard Chamberlain, a former teen idol who starred in Dr Kildare, has died aged 90. The TV heartthrob soared to fame in the 60s playing the titular character in the medical drama before starring in Shogun and The Thorn Birds.

When mini-series ruled prime time, their maxi-est star was Richard Chamberlain.

Chamberlain became king of the 1980's TV mini-series: playing a western prisoner in Shogun and a catholic priest tempted by love in The Thorn Birds. He denied being gay when confronted by a French magazine in 1989,
