Most commonly, fungi live in the soil. The spores that infect dogs are microscopic. Fungal infections on the skin, like ringworm, usually pass directly through skin contact or contaminated surfaces.

You can also contract ringworm from contact with a contaminated object, such as shared gym equipment. You may be more at risk if you are immunocompromised or play sports with a lot of skin contact.
