It's officially summer, and with that comes the first full moon of the season. July's full moon -- known as the Buck Moon or the Thunder Moon -- will light up the night sky on July 10 and be at its fullest going into July 11.
The next full moon is Saturday, Aug. 9, and is sometimes called the Sturgeon Moon. It gets that name from when "The Great Lakes and Lake Champlain sturgeon were said to be most readily caught," per the Old Farmer's Almanac.
The moon's near and far sides exhibit striking asymmetry—from topography and crustal thickness to volcanic activity—yet the origins of these differences have long puzzled scientists.
China has said it will land astronauts on the moon by 2030, while NASA is targeting a landing in 2027, though this has already been delayed.
