TURIN, Italy — Top-ranked Jannik Sinner became the first player to advance to the semifinals at the ATP Finals on Thursday. Sinner was assured of a spot in the last four after U.S. Open finalist Taylor Fritz beat Alex de Minaur 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in their group.

Jannik Sinner became the first player to reach the semifinals at the ATP Finals after Taylor Fritz defeated Alex de Minaur. Sinner, who faces Daniil Medvedev next, has already secured his place in the last four.

Taylor Fritz, the U.S. Open finalist who lost to Sinner in New York, was also drawn in the Italian’s group alongside Australian Alex De Minaur, making his ATP Tour Finals debut; Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev, who qualified as world No. 9 after Novak Djokovic withdrew, rounded out the second group.

On September 30, 2024, Medvedev won his most recent match, 6-2, 6-4, over Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals of the China Open. During the past two years, Sinner is 6-3 against Medvedev in their head-to-head matchups. Their last one happened at the US Open on September 4, 2024 and was won by Sinner 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Still plenty to play for in group Ilie Nastase, although the scenarios where Jannik Sinner doesn’t make the semifinals or Alex de Minaur does are mostly theoretical.

Alex de Minaur has been thrashed in his first two ATP Finals matches - but there is still a slim chance he can reach the semi-finals in Turin.
