The beach at Manual Antonio is covered by life guards, that watch the water for signs of tip tides or swimmer in distress, and warns/rescues swimmers if they see a problem. We were there during winter break, there was TONS of children of ALL ages (even toddlers). Waves were not bad as long as you didn't get out too deep. However, it is ocean, and they did call in some surfer/boggie boards on the day we were there because they saw signs of tip tide. However, it was out fairly deep (more than chest deep). You can bring food (but there are also venders on the beach) and you rent chairs/umbrellas if you need.
